As a busy caregiver, you might be more than ready for a vacation. The problem is, it can sometimes be hard to fit that luxury in to an already busy summer season. If it’s been way too long since your last vacation, and you’re really jonesing for some rest and relaxation, don’t panic. While you may not be able to have a full week to yourself, we have tips and ideas for how even the busiest caregivers can turn the rest of their summer days off into a blissful and peaceful “staycation” to remember!
Have you ever heard someone say they need a vacation from their vacation? While action-packed trips are great for some, a vacation of simply doing nothing may be more along the lines of what you’re looking for. The same goes with days off from work. When you feel like you’re already running ragged throughout the week, filling your days off with errands, chores, and activities might leave you feeling as though you really didn’t have a break from work at all! If busy activities on your days off seem more tiring than relaxing, we have some great relaxing ideas for you to treat yourself with, and they’re actually quite simple!
- Enjoy some isolated relaxation.
Do you have a busy household? While we wouldn’t trade our families for anything, everyone needs their alone time now and then. Make the keyword “now” and get that house empty and quiet! Send the kids to spend time with their grandparents, or a sibling who owes you a favor, and make this day about you. Play your favorite music, let some natural sunlight in, put your phone on silent, and simply relax in peace.
- Don’t D-I-Y.
A big part of this whole rest and relaxation thing is not doing things yourself. While some days you might get the crafting bug to DIY a great new project for your house, today is not that day. Call in reinforcements, because you aren’t lifting a finger! Don’t know what to make for dinner? Order your favorite take out! Don’t feel like cleaning your house? Treat yourself to a maid service for a day! You work hard for your money, and it’s okay to spend it on fun things for yourself sometimes too.
- Actually read a book.
When is the last time you gave yourself uninterrupted reading time? Do you feel like most of your reading time is spent either on work-related material, or scrolling through internet articles and social media newsfeeds on your smart phone? If a physical escape isn’t on the agenda, reading a great book can be the best way to escape mentally and emotionally. Also, while tablets can be useful, and a lot of fun, for this staycation I’m recommending an old school book with real pages. Give your eyes a rest from the screens, and even enjoy a deep inhale of the book pages and binding. There’s nothing like it. Find a comfortable place to park yourself, have a refreshing beverage on hand, and get lost in a great story.
- Have a movie marathon.
If reading isn’t really your thing, watching your favorite movies can also be a great way of temporarily escaping the real world. If you have kids in the house, there’s a good chance you can recite just about every line from the latest, trendiest animated features, but there’s also a good chance you haven’t selected some titles just for yourself in quite a while. Select some new releases you’ve been dying to see, or some oldies but goodies that you haven’t gotten to enjoy for a while, and host your own movie marathon day! You should probably also pick up some snacks ahead of time, because who doesn’t love movie snacks, right?
- Have a spa day.
Are your muscles tense? Do you feel like your skin and hair are just blah these days? Treat yourself to a day of pampered relaxation! Nothing makes me feel better than a fresh haircut. Cut those dead ends off, spice up your color, and enjoy having someone else shampoo your head. Have a massage and get those knots and kinks worked out of your tired, aching muscles. Take a long soak with some fancy bath oils, and get a facial. You could even treat yourself to a mani/pedi! There are so many possibilities, and right now they all sound pretty amazing.
A staycation doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, in can be the exact opposite! As long as you’re doing something you enjoy, your days off can be just what you need to feel refreshed and ready to tackle another week on the job. Most importantly, make time for yourself, and remember that you are a top priority in your own life! Do you have more relaxing staycation tips? Comment below! We’d love to hear from you!
